Great Indian philosophers and thinkers such as Swami Vivekananda (1863 1902), Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), Shri Arvind Ghosh (1872-1950), Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948), Bhimrao Ambedkar (1891-1956) and Sarvapaldha Ra. (1888-1975) gave his views on the education system. The ideas and concepts of various philosophers and thinkers, recommendations of various committees and commissions highlighted not only the national education system but also the need and importance of vocational education to increase individual employability and national productivity.

The need for a formal system of vocational education was introduced in 1854, when Lord Charles Wood developed a ‘Dispatch’ called ‘Woods Despatch’, known in Indian education as the Magna Carta. It was recommended by Woods Despatch to introduce vocational education through diversification of general education suggesting that vocational schools, technical institutes and vocational colleges need to be established. Indian Education Commission known as Hunter Commission (1982).
The commission examined the problems of education and recommended that there should be two special streams at the high school level, the first to prepare students for university entrance exams and the second to prepare students for practical business. Wood and Abbott Commission (1936)
